Growing Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley Oregon

Pinot Noir has a reputation for being a finicky grape, preferring cool nights and warm days. Outside of Burgundy, France there are only a limited number of spots where Pinots thrive and the Willamette Valley AVA is one of them.

Terroir, or the combination of soil, location and climate, is what gives distinct flavor to grapes. Our vineyards may be young, however our Terroir was millions of years in the making. Volcanoes, floods and primordial winds formed the remarkable Laurelwood soils, now recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) called the Laurelwood District AVA.

AVA classifications serve to distinguish one particular soil type and wine growing region from another. This, in turn, characterizes one Willamette Valley Oregon Wine from another. Three Feathers Vineyards are part of three AVAs. Firstly, the Willamette Valley AVA, secondly the Chehalem Mountains AVA and thirdly the Laurelwood District AVA. The last two are known as “nested AVAs”.

Pinot Noir Clones

Our wines are also defined by the types of grapevines planted in these soils because each Pinot Noir clone has its own characteristics of flavor, ripening and yield. We chose two Pinot Noir clones and one Pinot Gris for Three Feathers Vineyards: Pinot Noir 667, 115 and Pinot Gris 152. When blended together, these clones give the wine a depth of flavor and complexity that is unique to our soil, location and climate.
